And Just like that, the seasons have changed

Tomato-less planter beds

About mid-October we decided that tomato season 2025 had officially ended and we pulled up (and out) all the tomato vines from the garden and filled the green waste bin to overflowing. The fruit was still producing, but it wasn’t getting ripe anymore. Plus if we wanted any chance of planting in the fall, we had to make some room for new growth.

We also moved our various peppers and basil into the green house since they are all still thriving, and we do not want the coming colder weather to disrupt them too much. The yellow wax peppers I planted in late summer are absolutely taking off, and I’m so happy about that, since I wasn’t sure if they would grow at all. The habaneros are looking pretty fantastic as well, but I’ll let Alan do all the taste testing when it comes to the hot ones.

Freshly planted bed

This past weekend (November 2 to be exact) we planted this bed for the fall/winter. As stated in previous posted we’re big fans of companion planting. This time we may have gone a bit overboard and planted items a little too closely together, but that’s a problem for future us. From Right to Left the items planted are: cilantro, cauliflower, carrots, white onions, broccoli, red onions, carrots, spring onions, and another row of cilantro. We tend to cook with a lot of onion, so I’m hoping this part of the garden really takes off. I also planted a pot of Brussels sprouts, but I think the chickens may have gotten to them before I could put a cage around the pot.

After all the planting was done on the new bed, we added some greenhouse plastic over the top to protect the seeds from feathered predators and to retain some heat to foster growth in our new plantings.
